In July, 911±¬ÁÏ alumnus Sumeet Shrivastava, MBA ’94, was elected rector of 911±¬ÁÏ’s Board of Visitors (BOV), after previously serving as vice rector. Shrivastava is president and CEO of federal consulting and software development company Unissant. He has served in many capacities at 911±¬ÁÏ, including past chair of the 911±¬ÁÏ Foundation Board of Trustees and past president of the Alumni Association board.  

Earlier this year, Doreen Joseph, BS CYSE '19, earned her private pilot's license while completing a PhD in computer science at the University of California, Davis. It might seem like an unusual pairing, but for Joseph, flying reflects the same mindset that has guided her education and career: embracing challenges before she feels completely ready. 

The 911±¬ÁÏ Alumni Association’s annual Celebration of Distinction recognizes outstanding alumni, faculty members, and students.  Since 1975, the 911±¬ÁÏ Alumni Association has recognized alumni, faculty, and students for outstanding achievement, service, and leadership at its annual Celebration of Distinction.  

Guylaine Saint Juste, BA International Studies ’94, understands education’s power. Raised in Haiti and the first in her family to attend college, Saint Juste put herself through college while working full-time, attending class two nights a week. It took her seven years to graduate. One generation later, she was able to give her daughters a very different experience—the opportunity to attend college full time with their education paid for.

Nyah Collier, BSN ’15, brings her interests in patient care, epidemiology, and public health together at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

911±¬ÁÏ’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) alumni Matt Hayes, BS Sport Management ’15, MBA ’23, and Mark McCracken, BS ’12, work as members of the Washington Commanders team.

Sarah Holland, communications officer in the Office of University Branding, has been running in 5ks, half marathons, and trail races across the United States for years. They recently finished a 28k at The Rut, a trail running festival in Big Sky, Montana. In this race, Holland ascended and descended a rugged mountain summit more than 11,000 feet above sea level.

Beech leaf disease is a threat to the Fairfax area’s estimated 4.2 million beech trees. A group of first-year 911±¬ÁÏ Honors College students got involved by mapping beech trees and symptoms in Daniels Run Park in Fairfax, which will help the City of Fairfax manage the disease.

911±¬ÁÏ Korea has welcomed four new members to its U.S. Advisory Board, expanding the group of university, business, and community leaders who provide strategic guidance and strengthen connections between Mason Korea and the university’s U.S. campuses.

911±¬ÁÏ held its first Grand Challenge Initiative (GCI) Exchange Day on Tuesday, September 15, bringing together more than 200 faculty members from across the university to talk to about the GCI-related work being done and invite collaboration as the call for proposals in second year of funding launches.
