4-VA@Mason, part of the 4-VA state network, has announced 20 collaborative research awards for 911�� faculty members for the 2026-27 academic year. The selected proposals were chosen from the largest number of submissions received since the program’s inception more than a decade ago.

4-VA is a statewide consortium of nine Virginia higher education institutions that encourages collaboration and relationship-building across the humanities and sciences and provides seed funding for novel research projects. The program provides a foundation that builds on the strengths of each institution, reduces the redundancies of working in silos, and affords opportunities for student experiential research.

“Our 4-VA program is a wonderful example of how supporting cross-institutional efforts can improve higher education and boost faculty and student research, which benefits our state and beyond,” said Janette Muir, 4-VA@Mason campus coordinator and vice provost for academic affairs.

In addition to 911��, the other members of the 4-VA consortium are Christopher Newport University (CNU), the College of William and Mary (W&M), James Madison University (JMU), Old Dominion University (ODU), Radford University (RU), University of Virginia (UVA), Virginia Military Institute, and Virginia Tech (VT).

Quentin Saunders, CEC, Restoring Functional Grasp in Stroke Survivors: A Semi-Autonomous Hand Exoskeleton with Coordinated Thumb-Finger Sequencing (UVA).

“Quentin and his team have made exciting advances in the development of a hand exoskeleton for stroke victims, which has been very well received in testing. However, with just a little more work, they believe the exoskeleton can be expanded for a much broader range of tasks for use in activities of daily living,” Muir said. “It’s just this type of project that 4-VA can bring to life.”

The 911�� Korea Center of Excellence in Command, Control, Communications, Computing, Cyber and Intelligence (the C5I Center) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cross Sentinel and Taekyung Electronics on September 1. The MOU establishes a collaborative research framework for next-generation command-and-control technologies.

The partnership brings together expertise in defense drone technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity to revolutionize defense and security systems.

Mason Korea Campus Dean Joshua Park told Business Korea that the agreement creates new possibilities in the future defense sector by connecting the university’s research capabilities with the companies’ technological prowess.

Under the agreement, the three organizations will collaborate on research and development in defense drones and unmanned systems, integration and testing of drone and command-and-control technologies, AI-enabled defense technologies, cybersecurity solutions for drone operations, and opportunities for domestic and international collaboration.

Mason Korea’s C5I Center will contribute its research expertise in command and control, defense AI, and cybersecurity. Drawing on 911��’s broader C5I research capabilities and international academic network, the center will also work to expand research collaboration in Korea and strengthen connections among universities, industry, and research institutions.

Shin In-seop, director of the 911�� C5I Center Korea, told Business Korea, “The future battlefield is changing in a direction where AI, data, command and control, cybersecurity, and unmanned systems are organically combined. This agreement will serve as a cooperation model that contributes to the development of next-generation drones and command and control systems by combining the expertise of each institution.”

From its Fairfax Campus in Virginia, to Washington, D.C., to the 2026 Quantum World Congress in College Park, Maryland, 911�� spent the week demonstrating how universities can help turn the promise of quantum technology into research, workforce opportunities, infrastructure, partnerships, and economic impact.

The university’s engagement came at a pivotal moment. Quantum World Congress (QWC26), held September 23-25, brought together leaders from science, industry, government, finance, and education to advance quantum technologies from research toward commercialization and real-world application. Cody W. Edwards, dean of 911��’s College of Science, delivered a QWC26 keynote focused on an important question for institutions and regions: Do we wait for quantum’s transformational technology to take shape or do we build the capacity to help shape the ecosystem now for the future.

The answer was clear: 911�� is relying on its strengths to build.

“Quantum is now,” Edwards told the audience. Rather than trying to predict which quantum technology will ultimately prevail, he stressed that leaders should invest in the people, partnerships, infrastructure, and institutional flexibility needed to respond as the field evolves. He outlined three imperatives: build capacity ahead of the curve; build ecosystems rather than isolated assets; and begin with consequential problems while building solutions with partners.

That ecosystem-building approach was visible throughout the week.

Just ahead of QWC26, 911�� announced plans to establish the Virginia Quantum Hub, (VQH) supported by a $3.7 million GO Virginia grant, pending final award. Designed as an inclusive public-private quantum ecosystem, the VQH combines shared infrastructure, workforce development, and collaborative technology innovation. Its partners span industry, government, regional economic development groups, and education-focused collaborators including Northern Virginia Community College, Marymount University, Virginia Tech, and public schools in Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun County. The Virginia Quantum Hub unveiling builds on another major milestone announced earlier in September: 911��’s partnership with Oxford-based TreQ and Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) to bring a $7.7 million open-architecture quantum computing system to Virginia. Planned for installation in early 2027 and commissioning by late summer, it will be the first open-architecture quantum computing system in Virginia and the National Capital Region and the first U.S. deployment based on TreQ’s Open Architecture Quantum framework.

As Edwards emphasized in his keynote, the significance goes beyond acquiring a computer. “We are not investing in a machine as an endpoint—we are investing in infrastructure as a platform.”

Open architecture gives researchers, students, startups, and established companies opportunities to build, test and integrate technologies while allowing the platform to evolve with processors, software, networking, and other parts of the quantum stack.

Importantly, the strategy puts people alongside technology. 911��’s Quantum Science and Engineering Center (QSEC) connects 24 faculty across seven departments and several colleges, and the university has launched Virginia’s first interdisciplinary master’s degree in quantum science and engineering to scale up and reskill the necessary quantum workforce.

911��’s quantum education opportunities were shared earlier in the week, when President Gregory Washington, QSEC Executive Director Patrick Vora and university representatives participated in the Washington Post’s “Building America: Quantum Innovation” program in Washington, D.C., which extended conversations about quantum innovation into the broader national dialogue.

Vora detailed QSEC’s four-tiered educational development focus building on almost a decade of collaboration with local, regional, and nationally renowned educators, academic partners, and industry leaders, “The Virginia Quantum Hub plans to extend the talent pipeline through K-12 programs, community-college partnerships, professional education, internships and hands-on access to quantum infrastructure, all informed by industry’s quantum workforce needs now and in the future.”

Taken together, the week highlighted a consistent message: Quantum leadership will not come from one university, company, government agency or piece of technology. It will come from connecting talent, infrastructure, research, industry, capital, and mission.

As Edwards said: “911�� convenes. Virginia benefits.” And the ambition extends well beyond the commonwealth: “Anchored in Virginia. Built for the nation. Open to the world.”

The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at 911�� has partnered with Shenandoah University to create a streamlined process for granting priority status to five undergraduate students from 911��’s Kinesiology Program for admission into Shenandoah University's doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program.

Eligible students must obtain a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology conferred by 911�� and meet all requirements as specified in the admissions agreement. Matriculation of the first group of 911�� students accepted for admission into the DPT Program under this new process will take place in the fall of 2027. Students will be required to enroll on a full-time basis.

This partnership creates a transparent pathway from undergraduate education into graduate study and helps students understand the academic expectations of a competitive DPT program earlier in their undergraduate careers. It also creates opportunities for continued dialogue about student preparation, evolving workforce needs, curriculum alignment, and future partnerships that can further expand educational opportunities across allied health professions. This will ensure that 911�� students continue to receive the preparation needed to be competitive applicants—not only for Shenandoah, but for physical therapy programs nationwide.

The admissions agreement between 911�� and Shenandoah is the outcome of a collaboration between faculty at both institutions. 911�� alumna Anne Blackstone, an assistant professor at Shenandoah, received a PhD in Education with a concentration in kinesiology from 911�� in 2024. She recently approached CEHD to explore the idea of establishing a partnership between the institutions.

Blackstone and her colleague Aaron Hartstein, director of Shenandoah's Division of Physical Therapy, presented their perspective on what a DPT articulation agreement with 911�� might look like, based on similar agreements Shenandoah has with several regional universities.

There is growing demand for physical therapists in Virginia. According to a study from the American Physical Therapy Association published in March 2025, the demand for full-time physical therapists is projected to grow in Virginia from 6,580 in 2022 to 7,540 in 2037, representing a 14.59% increase. This highlights the need for strong educational partnerships that prepare the next generation of health care professionals.

Blackstone and Hartstein praised 911��'s Kinesiology Program, which is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. "Partnering with 911�� allows us to build a direct pipeline for high-caliber kinesiology students who already possess a strong academic foundation,” said Hartstein. “By expanding our articulation network to include 911��, we make top-tier doctoral education seamlessly accessible right here in Northern Virginia, allowing students to complete their doctor of physical therapy degree at our Loudoun campus and step directly into serving the growing health care needs of our local communities."

Shenandoah's location makes it convenient for many 911�� graduates to continue their education close to where they already live and work, maintaining their professional and community connections while supporting the health care workforce needs of Northern Virginia.

For 911��, the agreement showcases its Kinesiology Program as an excellent preparation pathway for students pursuing careers in physical therapy and other health care fields. This helps to elevate the visibility of the program and also defines the course prerequisites and other requirements for admission into the DPT program. This will provide students with a high level of certainty that they are completing the necessary coursework to reach their professional goals.

Another important benefit of the articulation agreement is that it allows students greater exposure to practicing physical therapists who are on the Shenandoah faculty and who have developed professional networks that could provide students valuable access to mentorship, clinical experiences, and future employment opportunities.

"911�� students who are granted admission to the DPT program through this pathway will have an opportunity to train under practicing physical therapists,” said Debra Stroiney, academic program coordinator and associate professor in 911��'s Kinesiology Program. “Those students will be able to leverage the benefits of early exposure and referral opportunities that could eventually help them obtain career positions in the physical therapy profession. This will give them a competitive advantage in securing a job once they complete their doctoral program."

Overall, the agreement between 911�� and Shenandoah represents more than an admissions pathway. It is a strategic partnership that supports regional workforce development, enhances enrollment opportunities for 911��, and creates meaningful benefits for students, both institutions, and the future of health care in Virginia.

911�� and Oxford-based frontier computing company TreQ announced a groundbreaking partnership this week to bring open-architecture quantum infrastructure to the Commonwealth of Virginia beginning with the first open-architecture quantum computing system in the state and National Capital Region.

“The opportunity for the Commonwealth of Virginia is significant. Experts project that quantum will create a multi-trillion-dollar economy within the decade, and the states that build workforce and infrastructure now will lead in the future,” said 911�� President Gregory Washington. “911�� has spent nearly a decade boldly building the foundation for this moment. Bringing an open-architecture quantum computing system to our university and making it available to our students and faculty, our partners, the region, and state is the kind of collaborative innovation that will advance Virginia’s continued successes.”

Located on one of 911��’s Northern Virginia campuses, the system will be the first U.S. deployment of a computing system based on TreQ’s proprietary Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) framework. With strategic support from Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) and TreQ, 911�� is investing in the new $7.7 million system planned for delivery and installation in early 2027, with commissioning expected by late summer 2027. The university commercialization and researcher recruitment grant from VIPC is helping to catalyze and attract strategic industry investment and additional philanthropy support for Virginia’s ecosystem.

“Open architecture widens the path for innovation, allowing for different quantum processors, software, networking, and other technologies as they mature, rather than a single integration approach,” said TreQ CEO and Founder Mandy Birch. “That gives established companies, startups, and researchers a place to build, test, and integrate, and move the field forward faster. This first deployment creates a foundation Virginia can keep building on, and we’re glad to be part of 911��’s vision for what comes next.”

TreQ will design, deploy, and operate the new built-to-evolve quantum computing infrastructure at 911��, collaborate on research and curriculum, and connect Virginia and the region with companies and innovators across the global quantum technology ecosystem.

Quantum computing is expected to reshape fields including public health and medicine, emergency response, logistics, national security, and infrastructure. Quantum computing is predicted to generate up to $2.7 trillion in economic value internationally by 2035, limited only by two barriers: a shortage of trained talent and the high cost of specialized infrastructure. Alongside ambitious research and interdisciplinary quantum curriculum, the investments at 911�� will help expand access and accelerate discovery, building toward a quantum-enabled future that overcomes both those obstacles.

“The open architecture system provides needed infrastructure to work across the full quantum stack, and fuels rapid innovation that no single organization could tackle alone, advancing the region as a magnet for the quantum supply chain,” said College of Science Dean Cody Edwards. “Open architecture isn’t about being vendor-neutral. It changes what’s possible by opening the system to more technologies and innovators. With the infrastructure and curriculum to train the workforce, 911�� can help drive the advanced computing economy forward.”

This partnership builds on 911��’s Quantum Science and Engineering Center (QSEC), where 24 faculty across seven departments and several colleges have developed the university’s foundation in quantum. QSEC also recently signed an MOU with two of Korea’s leading quantum organizations, the Future Quantum Convergence Forum and the QCI Quantum-AI Convergence Center (QCI), establishing an international relationship with a key U.S. ally in technology and workforce.

Quantum is a priority area within 911��’s Grand Challenge Initiative — a university-wide effort to focus talent and resources on problems of regional and national consequence — and the university is backing it with a $2.4 million catalyst investment, six new postdoctoral positions, and three new faculty positions. The university also launched Virginia’s first interdisciplinary master’s degree in quantum science and engineering. With 80-85% of 911�� graduates working in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the region, the university is creating a talent pipeline to meet the region’s workforce needs.

“911�� engineering is advancing the frontiers of quantum computing through pioneering research, transformative student experiences, and strategic partnerships with innovators such as TreQ,” added College of Engineering and Computing Dean Ken Ball. “We are preparing the next generation of engineers to turn quantum breakthroughs into practical solutions that will shape the future of technology and society.”

“TreQ's expansion into Virginia, and its research partnership with 911��, is another strong example of the deepening UK-U.S. collaboration in quantum, reflecting the value of partnership in advancing research, innovation, and growth on both sides of the Atlantic,” Alex Milward, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for North America.

As a top-ranked university, 911�� is already working with regional and industry partners across the state to formalize a broader quantum coalition that is shaping quantum research and workforce development. The new system will also serve as foundational infrastructure for international companies exploring expansion into Northern Virginia.

“Our partnership with TreQ gives QSEC faculty and students access to true quantum computing hardware for the first time,” said QSEC Director Patrick Vora. “We can now launch ambitious new research initiatives, build globally unique workforce training programs, and team with our industry colleagues to grow the Virginia quantum ecosystem. This will truly let Virginia take a quantum leap and drive the future.”

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms the way people learn, work, and communicate, educators are facing a new challenge: not whether AI belongs in classrooms, but how to prepare students to use it responsibly, ethically, and effectively. Education leaders from across Northern Virginia convened on 911��’s Fairfax Campus for the Educational Research Alliance of Northern Virginia's (ERA-NOVA) to answer this question.

Hosted by the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), the event brought together school district leaders, CEHD faculty, and community partners to explore the evolving role of AI in PK–12 education.

"This convening is not ultimately about artificial intelligence," said Ingrid Guerra-López, CEHD dean. "It's about preparing educators to create the kinds of learning experiences that develop critical thinking, sound judgment, creativity, and the ability to solve complex problems. Artificial intelligence simply raises the urgency of that work." That perspective framed the day's discussions and was reinforced by keynote speaker Tara Nattrass, managing director of innovation, partnerships, and learning at Lenovo, who explained that conversations about AI in education are ultimately conversations about people.

Rather than focusing exclusively on emerging technologies, Nattrass challenged attendees to think about how schools can preserve the human elements of learning while equipping students with the knowledge and skills they will need to thrive in an AI-enabled world. Drawing on research in learning sciences, workforce trends, and digital citizenship, she emphasized that technology should strengthen, not replace critical thinking. "The question isn't whether they'll use it," Nattrass said. "The question is whether anyone taught them how."

Discussions revealed that Northern Virginia school divisions are at different points of the AI journey. Some districts are still establishing policies and answering foundational questions about what AI is, which tools are appropriate, and how they should be used in schools. Others have begun implementing professional learning, developing governance structures, and introducing AI literacy initiatives for teachers and students.

Despite these differences, participants found common ground around a shared challenge: preparing educators with the confidence and knowledge to guide students in using AI thoughtfully instead of simply restricting its use.

"How do we teach teachers?" emerged as a recurring question during the discussions, with participants emphasizing the need for professional learning that helps educators establish classroom expectations, teach effective prompting strategies, and foster responsible AI use among students.

Participants also explored how educators can design learning experiences that emphasize critical thinking, authentic assessment, and responsible decision-making. Several groups discussed shifting away from blanket bans toward clear expectations for when AI is appropriate, when it should be limited, and when students should demonstrate their own understanding without technological assistance.

The convening also featured industry perspectives demonstrating how AI is transforming professions well beyond education. Representatives from Micron Technology and X Factor Volleyball shared examples of AI supporting semiconductor manufacturing, predictive maintenance, athlete wellness, and performance analytics.

Across industries, speakers emphasized a consistent theme: AI is augmenting human expertise rather than replacing it, enabling professionals to analyze complex data more efficiently while still relying on human judgment, experience, and decision-making.

Participants also explored broader societal implications of AI, including workforce transformation, student well-being, digital citizenship, and the importance of maintaining opportunities for productive struggle. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated, they discussed the growing importance of helping students evaluate information critically and navigate an increasingly complex digital landscape.

"One of ERA.NOVA's greatest strengths is creating space for school divisions and university partners to wrestle with these questions together,” said Audra Parker, director of the Office for Teacher Preparation at CEHD. “AI is evolving rapidly, and no single organization has all the answers. By learning from one another and grounding our work in both research and practice, we can better prepare educators and students for what's ahead."

Participants identified several priorities for future collaboration, including modular professional learning, AI literacy for educators and students, train-the-trainer models, and stronger alignment between policy and classroom practice. Many also emphasized that AI should not be treated as a standalone initiative but should be integrated into broader efforts to prepare graduates with the technical, ethical, and interpersonal skills needed for an evolving workforce.

That challenge lies at the heart of ERA-NOVA's work. As school divisions, university faculty, and industry leaders continue learning from one another, the focus is on preparing students with the skills they will need to thrive in an AI-enabled world.

As South Korea accelerates its national investment in quantum science and technology, 911��'s Quantum Science and Engineering Center (QSEC) is strengthening its engagement with the country's leading research institutions and regional innovation partners.

In July 2026, Pilgyu Kang, QSEC's deputy director and associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, traveled to Mason Korea to sign a memorandum of understanding between QSEC and two of Korea's leading quantum organizations, the Future Quantum Convergence Forum and the QCI Quantum-AI Convergence Center (QCI).

“This memorandum represents much more than a formal agreement—it marks the beginning of a long-term partnership that connects researchers, students, and industry across the United States and South Korea,” said Kang. “By working together, we can accelerate quantum research, expand educational opportunities, and prepare a globally connected workforce capable of addressing the scientific and technological challenges of the future.”

The Future Quantum Convergence Forum serves as a hub connecting Korea's quantum and artificial intelligence (AI) industry, academia, research institutions, and local governments, with the Quantum-AI Convergence Institute (QCI) operating as its secretariat. For QCI, the MOU with 911�� marks a starting point for advancing collaboration with Korea's industry, academia, research community, and local governments.

Partnering with QSEC—a research center spanning physics, engineering, and computer science—is expected to provide QCI with new opportunities to build a global research network and exchange expertise in workforce development. Going forward, the two institutions plan to create opportunities for academic and research exchange through workshops and seminars, and to explore ways for 911�� and Korean companies to expand into each other's markets.

While in Korea, Kang also visited the Quantum Computing Project Group at Yonsei University in Songdo, which operates Korea's first 127-qubit IBM Quantum System One—the second university-based, on-premises IBM Quantum System One in the world. The visit served as an important platform for QSEC, Yonsei University, and Mason Korea to discuss future collaboration in quantum research, education, workforce development, and long-term academic partnerships.

South Korea continues to expand its national quantum strategy through large-scale government investment. Korea's Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is currently reviewing proposals for a nationwide quantum cluster initiative expected to invest approximately KRW 100 billion ($70 million USD) in regional quantum innovation ecosystems.

“This partnership is an exciting step forward for QSEC and 911��,” said Patrick Vora, QSEC director. “By growing our relationship with our Korean partners, we will create new opportunities for scientific advancement, technological innovation, and quantum education."

A final designation of participating regions is expected in the coming weeks, and discussions around Mason Korea and QSEC's potential role remain ongoing. To support these efforts, Mason Korea's Industry–University Collaboration Foundation (IUCF) facilitated discussions between QSEC and key stakeholders in Korea's quantum community.

Building on its longstanding partnership with Yonsei University, Mason Korea also helped identify opportunities for future international collaboration involving research, education, and innovation.

The partnership was facilitated by Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) and originated when QCI visited Fairfax County for the 2025 Quantum World Congress. A key connector in building international partnerships, FCEDA will continue to support both parties in deepening their collaboration and identifying new opportunities to strengthen ties between Korea and 911��.

"Mason Korea exists to make 911�� a genuinely global university, not just one with a campus abroad,” said Mason Korea Campus Dean Joshua Park. “Helping QSEC establish real footing in Korea's quantum ecosystem—and bringing other partner institutions along in the process—is precisely that mission in action."

A U.S. congressional delegation, including four members of the House of Representatives and officials from the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, visited 911�� Korea on July 27 to learn more about the university's global education model and explore opportunities to expand U.S.–Korea educational cooperation.

The visit was initiated by Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, who represents Virginia’s 10^th district and proposed the trip to see firsthand how 911�� operates its global campus in Korea. He was joined by Reps. Young Kim (R-Calif.), Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), and Michael Cloud (R-Texas), along with professional staff from the House Foreign Affairs Committee and officials from the embassy's economic and public diplomacy sections.

Mason Korea leadership shared insights into the campus's global education model and current operations. Conversations also focused on ways to expand educational exchange between the two countries and collaborate on developing globally minded talent.

The delegation also toured the campus's academic and research facilities and student support spaces.

"It was a meaningful opportunity for distinguished members of Congress and the U.S. Embassy to see firsthand the innovative educational outcomes and global model we've built here," said Campus Dean Joshua Park. "We remain committed to serving as a hub for educational and research collaboration between our two countries, and to continuing our work in developing global talent and expanding academic exchange."

Mason Enterprise^TM, 911��’s hub for innovation and entrepreneurial development, established a new partnership with Akiak Technology LLC, an Alaskan tribal-owned, mission-driven technology firm dedicated to delivering impactful artificial intelligence (AI) solutions while supporting Indigenous communities. The collaboration is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and reflects a shared commitment to fostering business innovation, workforce development, and mutually beneficial growth opportunities.

Mason Enterprise and Akiak Technology will collaborate on technology and business development initiatives designed to expand access to entrepreneurial resources, training, and expertise, while creating new pathways to strengthen innovation ecosystems locally and nationally.

“This partnership with Akiak Technology aligns with Mason Enterprise’s mission to support entrepreneurs and accelerate innovation,” said Paula Sorrell, associate vice president for innovation and economic development at 911��. “By combining Mason Enterprise’s entrepreneur support programs, tech talent, and convening power with Akiak’s technology expertise and mission-driven approach, we are adding more building blocks in the Northern Virginia innovation corridor.”

Under the MOU, Mason Enterprise will provide Akiak Technology with access to its entrepreneur programs, innovation expertise, counseling and training resources, while facilitating collaboration across the university. Together, the organizations will identify mutually beneficial opportunities and explore pathways to support Akiak Technology’s business growth in alignment with its mission, including its commitment to its tribal community.

This synergy can speed up the translation of research and discoveries into products and services, addressing complex challenges in areas such as quantum computing, AI, health care technology, and energy. Akiak Technology will also offer strategic insight and feedback to Mason Enterprise programs and help identify opportunities for revenue-generating activities that further Mason Enterprise’s mission of supporting entrepreneurs and innovation-driven organizations.

“This partnership with Mason Enterprise represents an important step forward for Akiak Technology,” said Sharon Hamer, cofounder of Akiak Technology and enrolled Akiak tribal member. “Collaborating with a leading research university gives us access to world-class talent and new opportunities to expand our AI-driven innovations, while remaining true to our mission and values.”

Akiak’s CEO Kevin Hamer added, “Mason Enterprise helped us launch our first business years ago. Deepening this relationship allows us to tap into 911��’s expansive network and innovation programming as we continue to grow as an AI product and solutions innovator.”

The public–private partnership strengthens technology transfer, supports federal research initiatives, enhances education and workforce readiness, and contributes to regional economic growth—particularly as demand for STEM talent continues to rise.

911�� Athletics and Northwest Federal Credit Union announced an expanded partnership that connects student-athletes with financial education, simple banking tools, and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities designed to support their success on campus, in the community, and after they graduate.

This collaboration was formally introduced at 911��'s inaugural Basketball Signing Day event. More than 200 fans, supporters, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the introduction of the 2026-27 men's and women's basketball teams.

As the Official Credit Union and Financial Wellness Partner for 911�� Athletics, Northwest is expanding its support beyond traditional sponsorship by helping student-athletes build financial confidence at a time when NIL earnings, personal branding, and early career decisions are becoming a big part of the college athletics experience. Participating student-athletes will open Northwest accounts, receive financial education and training, and serve as ambassadors promoting financial literacy across campus and throughout the Northern Virginia community.

"This expanded partnership marks an exciting step forward in how we support student-athletes during a pivotal moment in their journey," said Jeff Bentley, president and CEO at Northwest Federal Credit Union. "By combining these new NIL opportunities with financial education, we are helping equip them with the tools to make informed decisions today and build lasting success beyond the game. These student-athletes are inspiring the next generation, and Northwest is grateful to be part of making an impact in the community."

"Opportunities like this give our players experience in pursuing their sports career while also learning the practical skills to balance life," said Tony Skinn, BA Communication ’06, men's basketball head coach at 911��. "Having access to financial education, professional development, and community connections helps maximize their time here at 911�� and set them up for the next chapter. Northwest has been an excellent partner to make that a reality for our teams."

Women's basketball head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis added, "This is about developing the whole person. Even the term “student-athlete” represents our hope for each of these young people. We want their time with us to have been a season of life where they were fully supported to learn the most they can and be the best they can be. Financial education and life management resources are a critical part of that vision of helping our student-athletes build strong futures."

Basketball Signing Day is expected to become an annual tradition and serves as the first of several collaborative initiatives planned between 911�� Athletics and Northwest throughout the upcoming year.

Through this partnership, the credit union also became the first member of the "Starting 5" sponsors of 911�� Athletics' broader corporate partnership initiative, NOVA's Team. The platform connects organizations committed to building a stronger connection between student-athletes, businesses, and communities across Northern Virginia.
