Remi Veneziano. Photo provided

Associate Professor Remi Veneziano and Professor Parag Chitnis in the Department of Bioengineering received a Tier 2 VIPC award to advance the development of a contrast agent for photoacoustic imaging. The two-year, $200,000 grant will support efforts to scale-up production and demonstrate that the material can be manufactured consistently for translation outside of a laboratory setting.

If successful, the work could provide a standardized, scalable contrast agent for photoacoustic imaging and expand its use across biomedical research.

Photoacoustic imaging combines light and ultrasound to visualize biological tissues. While the technique can detect naturally occurring molecules such as hemoglobin, it lacks widely available contrast agents that can target specific tissues or disease sites. As a result, researchers often create their own materials, which vary from lab to lab.

Veneziano began working on the problem about eight years ago with collaborators at 911±¬ĮĻ. His team focused on developing a contrast agent using indocyanine green, an FDA-approved dye. Instead of relying on complex chemical processes, the group created a method based on self-assembly, allowing the dye molecules to form aggregates with controlled size and surface properties.

ā€œWe figured out a method to control the size of the assembly without the need for complex chemistry,ā€ Veneziano said. ā€œWhen you reduce the chemicals and the number of steps, you make it easier for manufacturing and future approval or at least to make something safer.ā€

The team refined the process to the point where researchers in the lab can reliably produce aggregates with specific characteristics tailored for specific applications. Early funding, including a previous VIPC Tier 1 award and a university seed grant, supported initial development and validation. The group published its findings in 2023 and began building collaborations with other researchers.

A key step in the work involved combining standard indocyanine green dye molecules with modified versions of this dye that allow for additional functionality, such as targeting specific cells or adding other fluorescent molecules. That approach helped turn the material into a more flexible platform that can be adapted for different research needs.

The current grant focuses on what Veneziano described as the transition from a ā€œlab productā€ to something that could be used more broadly. That includes demonstrating reproducibility across batches, establishing quality control standards, and determining how long the material can be stored without losing effectiveness.

ā€œWhen you want to commercialize a product, you need to demonstrate reproducibility and quality control,ā€ he said. ā€œFrom one batch to another batch, you always want the same properties.ā€

Veneziano and his collaborators are also working with 911±¬ĮĻ’s Office of Technology Transfer and filed a patent application related to the technology. The team founded a start-up, NanOptical Biomedical Inc., to pursue commercialization, and the team plans to seek additional funding through the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs.

At the same time, the research continues to evolve. The team is working with collaborators to adapt the platform for different applications, including adding fluorescent capabilities and improving targeting for specific diseases. ā€œWe are at a stage where we are learning from them, from their experience, from what they need, how to make our particle better,ā€ Veneziano said.

Topics

Topics

Bioengineering

Bioengineering Primary Faculty

imaging

Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation

Research

patent

Tech Transfer

Mon, 27 Apr 2026 12:08:24 +0000 Nathan Kahl 346014 at 911±¬ĮĻ delivers first commercialization under Virginia’s Lab-to-Launch initiative /news/2026-02/george-mason-delivers-first-commercialization-under-virginias-lab-launch-initiative 911±¬ĮĻ delivers first commercialization under Virginia’s Lab-to-Launch initiative Katarina Benson Wed, 02/25/2026 - 14:27

Body

911±¬ĮĻ has become Virginia’s first R1 research institution to commercialize a product under the state’s new Lab-to-Launch initiative, marking an early milestone in the commonwealth’s push to accelerate university research into the market.

Anthony Fung. (IST) Assistant Professor Sungsoo Ray Hong has always loved cartoons. Now he’s helping the artists who make them.

Drawing on his expertise in human-computer interaction (HCI) and artificial intelligence (AI), Hong and colleague Yotam Gingold, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS) created ShadowMagic, a new human-AI collaboration tool designed to make one of the most time-consuming parts of comic creation faster and easier.

The idea for ShadowMagic emerged from interviews with professional cartoonists. Hong, Gingold and their PhD students wanted to reduce the burden of shadowing, a task many artists find repetitive and time-consuming.

ā€œProfessional cartoonists are sometimes producing content every other day,ā€ said Hong, who is also director of 911±¬ĮĻ’s Alignment Lab. ā€œYou cannot commit to these kinds of deadlines doing everything by yourself. That's why the colorization industry is so helpful to professional cartoonists.ā€

Colorization is a multi-step process of line drawing, flatting, base colorization, adding shadows and lighting, backgrounds, and other special effects. It is ā€œfairly standardized, especially in South Korea and growing throughout the United States,ā€ said Hong, who is from South Korea. ShadowMagic builds on an earlier project, FlatMagic, another AI-driven colorization tool designed to support digital comic professionals.

While there are existing AI tools that help with colorization, Hong and Gingold found that these tools require more work than doing it manually. They wanted to design a system that better augments cartoonists’ work and cuts down on shadowing, a labor intensive and, according to cartoonists, decidedly uncreative part of the process.

ā€œWe looked at artistic challenges, usually tedious things that aren’t so fun for the artists and break down those problems, so that they can focus more on the creative parts of it,ā€ said Gingold, who directs 911±¬ĮĻ’s Computational Reality, Creativity, and Graphics Lab.

Gringold explained that there are millions of pixels in an image, and if an artist wants to move or change the color of an object, they currently have to point at one pixel among the millions.

Yotam Gingold (left) and Ray Hong in Research Hall, presenting their colorization tool. Photo by Cristian Torres/Office of University Branding.

Gingold’s research applies computer science to visual, geometric, and design problems. He has ā€œalways been interested in sketching and how computers can help us express ourselves.ā€ Many of his algorithms automate filling in pixels and handling visual constraints.

ā€œThe computers will do the math where we can write formulas to update all the other millions of pixels. Another example would be keeping lines parallel and corners perpendicular, and that’s where a lot of my research comes in,ā€ he said.

Chuan Yan, PhD ’24, was recruited by Gingold for this project and conducted research on sketching and painting. Yan, now a postdoctoral research at Stanford University, brought expertise in computer graphics and sketch-related computer vision techniques, which he had studied extensively with Gingold.

The team built ShadowMagic as an Adobe Photoshop plug-in, and since its release, it has attracted a lot of interest from professional artists.

ā€œArtists have expressed a strong desire for a tool that could free them from the labor-intensive flatting process,ā€ said Yan. ā€œThis response is both exciting and humbling. It confirms that our research is addressing a real need in the industry yet also highlights the remaining challenges in making [the tool] ready for widespread adoption.ā€

Yan believes ShadowMagic is just the beginning of a broader shift in creative industries towards tools that amplify creativity rather than replace it.

ā€œI am excited to witness and contribute to this transformation, helping to shape a future where AI acts as a powerful tool that amplifies human creativity rather than replacing it,ā€ he said.

Read the full paper: ShadowMagic: Designing Human-AI Collaborative Support for Comic Professionals’ Shadowing by Amrita Ganguly, Chuan Yan, John Joon Young Chung, Tong Steven Sun, Yoon Kiheon, Yotam Gingold, and Sungsoo Ray Hong.
