The 911�� women's basketball team has captured a share of the 2026 Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship—the first regular season conference title in program history. The Patriots closed league play with a program-best 16-2 conference record, marking their strongest Atlantic 10 ever.

911�� shares the title with Rhode Island after both teams finished atop the A-10 standings. The 16 conference victories set a new school record and cap one of the most successful seasons in program history. The championship also marks another major milestone, as the Patriots secure their first-ever stretch of three consecutive 20-win seasons—a testament to the sustained excellence being built at 911��.

By virtue of their regular season finish and conference tie-breaker protocol, the Patriots have earned the No. 2 seed and a double-bye in the 2026 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship. 911�� will open tournament play in the quarterfinal round on Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. on USA Network, facing either No. 7 Dayton or No. 10 George Washington.

On Saturday, February 7, 911�� student and reigning world figure skating champion Ilia Malinin helped power the United States to a team figure skating gold medal at the Milano Cortina Winter Games.

“This is your moment—it’s either do or die,” Malinin told reporters following his performance. “You have to go into this 100% and really know that it’s all up to you. I went in there with that mindset and really just let everything take its course.”

In his Olympic debut, Malinin, a 21-year-old exploratory studies major in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, became the first 911�� student or alumni to ever claim a Winter Olympics gold medal. He’ll be a heavy favorite to add to his medal haul when the men’s singles competition gets underway on Tuesday, February 10, starting at 12:30 p.m.

To support Malinin, large TV screens have been set up in the Johnson Center atrium on the Fairfax Campus and in the lobby of Fuse at Mason Square, giving the Mason Nation the opportunity to gather and cheer one of their own.

A Vienna native and 2023 graduate of George C. Marshall High School, Malinin—nicknamed the “Quad God”—has been one of the most recognizable figures of the Olympics, known for both his charisma and his ability to push the sport forward through the extreme difficulty of his jumps. He’s the only figure skater to have successfully landed a quad axel in competition, a jump requiring four and a half revolutions.

After a solid performance in Saturday’s initial skate, Malinin upped his game in spectacular fashion the following day, executing five quad jumps to help Team USA surpass Japan for Olympic gold.

Speaking to the press afterwards, Malinin reflected on the pressure of competing as the overwhelming favorite.

“That’s something that everyone has to go through. They have to find a way to motivate themselves and keep it together during that pressure,” he said. “A lot of the times, I’m able to use that pressure and embrace it and tell myself, ‘You have all the attention, now it’s your time to go out there and do what you know how to do, and put your trust in everything you’ve worked to up to this moment.’”

Kathleen (Kathy) McKay has deep ties to Fairfax, Virginia, her hometown. Her parents, James "Smilin’ Jim" and Ruth Averill McKay, were pioneers in the Fairfax business community; her father opened Jim McKay Chevrolet in 1956, becoming one of the first car dealers in the area.

As student athlete at Woodson High School, she grew up near 911��'s burgeoning Fairfax Campus. “I played field hockey, I played softball, and I was a swimmer,” she said.

Much of that swim experience took place at a neighborhood club, where her own daughters still hold records from the 1990s. After graduating from James Madison University, she returned to Fairfax.

McKay is now the president of Jim McKay Chevrolet, a sponsor for many student activities and sports at 911��, and Intercollegiate Athletics has been at the heart of her personal connection with the university. Since the mid-1990s, she’s been an avid Patriots fan, attending many men's and women's basketball games, including the ones out of town, often with her daughters and now her grandchildren.

“I’ve always been a sports person,” McKay said. “I love college athletics; it’s the excitement. This is something that the athletes really, really want to do, and so few make it [to this level].”

She also appreciates the role college sports plays in bringing a community together. “It’s everything. No matter what your preference is, we offer every sport to allow a fan to be involved.”

McKay's support extends far beyond the sidelines. She has been a generous donor to 911�� for nearly 20 years, serving as a member of the Patriot Club Advisory Board and in the Green Coat Society, which recognizes generous, multi-year donors.

In 2017, she made a leadership gift to the university's basketball fundraising campaign, resulting in the naming of the K. McKay Court at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC). Her philanthropy has included substantial gifts—in conjunction with the family-linked Richard W. Averill Foundation and Jim McKay Chevrolet—to a variety of 911��’s teams, including a pledge that touched all 22 sports teams during an annual Mason Vision Day.

She has also made gifts to the College of Visual and Performing Arts' scholarship benefit ARTS by George! and to the Green Machine ensembles.

“Kathy McKay embodies the spirit of 911�� and the Northern Virginia community,” said Marvin Lewis, assistant vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Her loyalty and generosity have touched every corner of our program—from cheering courtside to investing in opportunities that enrich the student-athlete experience. Kathy’s passion, rooted in family and community, reflects the very best of what it means to be a Patriot, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have her in our corner.”

McKay carries on a family tradition of philanthropy and community service—911��’s Jim McKay Natatorium in the Aquatic and Fitness Center on the Fairfax Campus, a regional resource that includes a 50-meter Olympic-sized competition pool, bears the name of her father. She is continuing that tradition and is encouraging a culture of connected philanthropy through her own children: her daughter, April, and son-in-law, Matt, are also active supporters of 911�� Athletics.

McKay has been there for some of basketball’s biggest moments.

She remembers being warmly welcomed by the men’s basketball team, including then-coach Jim Larrañaga and his wife, Liz, when she traveled with the team to the ESPN Events Invitational Thanksgiving tournament in Orlando, Florida, in 2007. She also attended Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Tournaments at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, including “during COVID, in March 2020, [when] we got sent home after winning our first game.”

McKay was also in the front rows at the Robins Center in Richmond when the men’s basketball team defeated the University of Richmond to claim the 2025 A-10 regular season title, the team’s first. That same season saw Patriots Head Coach Tony Skinn, whom McKay had known since his undergraduate days, named A1-0 Coach of the Year.

“Tony was my pick from day one when we were searching for a coach,” she said.

With a grandson in tow, McKay traveled in March 2025 with the women’s basketball team to Richmond for the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship, where 911�� defeated St. Joseph’s to claim the title for the first time.

“I couldn’t not go, and they win this thing—because I really thought they could,” she said.

She also joined the women’s team for the España 2025 cultural and athletic expedition, where the Patriots played international opponents in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. With her on the trip was her eldest granddaughter, who has been attending games with McKay since she was six months old.

“Riley and I had a time together that neither one of us will ever forget!” she said.

She plans to enjoy as many games and team activities as she can fit on her calendar. “I love it!” she said. “I’m always looking at the schedule to see who’s playing what.”

More than two decades ago, three 911�� students launched a company from their dorm room with a belief that technology would drive change in the federal government.

Today, that company—MetroStar, a venture-backed leader in AI enabled services—has come full circle. The company is proud to announce a multi-year strategic partnership with 911��, solidifying a shared mission to empower the next generation of tech leaders and public servants.

Through the agreement, MetroStar will support students and programming across 911��. It will become a Costello Corporate Partner in the Donald G. Costello College of Business and an Industry Partner in the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC).

Through these partnerships, MetroStar will launch a scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students with preference for those minoring in government contracting or management information systems, and a Clearance Ready Scholarship for students interested in obtaining a national security clearance.

“MetroStar’s investment in the Costello Corporate Partners program aligns closely with our strategic priorities, particularly in fostering innovative business collaboration and advancing career readiness,” said Ajay Vinzé, interim provost and Costello College of Business dean. “Their support will expand access to education in government contracting for our students and strengthen the academic offerings of the Greg and Camille Baroni Center for Government Contracting, the first university-based center in the nation focused on the business, policy, and regulatory dimensions of this vital sector.”

MetroStar will also support academic initiatives through the Dean’s Excellence Funds in CEC and Costello, in furtherance of strategic academic initiatives. “This gift from MetroStar, which will support the education and training of our students who are interested in serving our nation as federal employees or as employees of our government contractors,” said CEC Dean Ken Ball. “The partnership will also enhance our clearance ready programs by developing additional experiential learning opportunities, including internships and applied research projects involving classified technologies that protect our nation.”

“This is more than a corporate partnership. It’s a personal return,” said Manouchehri. “911�� is where we built the foundation for MetroStar. We’re investing in students who will one day shape the digital future of government just like we dreamed about doing back then.”

Manouchehri started MetroStar with fellow Patriots Robert Santos, BA International Relations ’99, who became the company’s president, and Pirooz Javan, BS Systems Engineering ’02, who served as its chief operating officer from 1999 to 2006.

A Vision for the Future Federal Workforce

The three-year partnership, running through 2028, creates a new model of agile collaboration between academia and the public sector, bridging the fast-paced world of government innovation with the grounded mission of education. It reflects the growing need under the new federal administration to build talent pipelines that are not only technically skilled but clearance ready and public service minded.

Earlier this year, 911�� released its plan for advancing a responsible approach to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and driving societal impact. Through AI²Nexus, the university is building a nexus of collaboration and resources on campus, in partnerships like the one with MetroStar, and across the state.

As federal agencies embrace AI, digital transformation, and faster acquisition models, companies like MetroStar are reinforcing the importance of the human side of innovation, ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow is built on a foundation of collaboration, education, and civic commitment.

From College Campus to National Service

The partnership extends into the university’s forward-leaning spaces, places where creativity, entrepreneurship, and service intersect.

MetroStar’s partnership will fuel the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX), a hands-on incubator for student-driven ideas, and power events like PatriotHacks, the university’s high-energy hackathon that challenges students to solve real-world problems with code and courage.

The 2006 Final Four run by the 911�� men’s basketball team was an achievement so improbable, so unprecedented, that it transformed how the college basketball world viewed possibility itself.

Now, 20 years later, the Patriots will honor that magical postseason journey on Saturday, December 13, when they host Old Dominion University at EagleBank Arena. That run endures as one of the most defining moments in the university’s history and one of the NCAA Tournament’s most memorable Cinderella stories. What began as a hopeful March ended with a mid-major program standing on college basketball’s biggest stage.

They captured the hearts of the nation along the way.

“That definitely opened the door for mid-majors,” said 911�� men’s basketball Head Coach Tony Skinn, who was the starting point guard on that Final Four team. “It showed that if you have belief, the right players, and the right coaches, anything can happen in the NCAA Tournament.”

That belief was tested again and again throughout that 2006 run.

Competing out of the relatively unknown Colonial Athletic Association, the Patriots became the league’s first Final Four representative, toppling one powerhouse after another.

They opened tournament play with a 75-65 win over a Michigan State, a team that had returned four starters from the previous season’s Final Four squad. The sixth-seeded Spartans had outlasted 911�� by six points in an early regular-season meeting a year earlier.

Next came the North Carolina Tar Heels, the No. 3 seed and the reigning NCAA champions, who fell 65-60 in the Patriots’ second and final game in Dayton, Ohio. From there, 911�� returned to the nearby Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., where a heavily partisan crowd watched four Patriots score in double figures in a 63-55 Sweet 16 win over fellow mid-major and No. 7 overall seed Wichita State University. That victory advanced the Patriots to the Elite Eight against overall No. 1 seed University of Connecticut.

Loaded with talent, the Huskies featured four players who would soon be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, and five who would be among the league’s top 40 picks. They were also led by Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun.

Fueled by a massive and vocal Mason Nation presence, the Patriots embraced the underdog role against UConn. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half and nine in the second, 911�� rallied to shock the sports world with an 86-84 overtime win—one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history —punctuating the victory with a trip to the Final Four in Indianapolis.

“It was great for college basketball,” said Lamar Butler, a former standout senior guard on that Final Four team who now serves as 911��’s director of player development. “That’s what people watch the tournament for.”

In the years since, Virginia Commonwealth University (2011), Loyola Chicago (2018), UCLA (2021), and North Carolina State (2024) have also reached the Final Four as 11th seeds. LSU was the first to accomplish the feat in 1986.

“We believed in ourselves,” said Jim Larrañaga who serves as head coach at 911�� from 1997 to 2011. “We weren’t hoping to win. We believed we would win.”

More than 10,000 fans packed what was then the Patriot Center when the team returned home following its dramatic win over UConn.

Before the tournament, 911�� was largely unknown beyond the Mid-Atlantic region. That changed almost overnight. The team’s improbable run generated an estimated $677.5 million in free publicity from print and broadcast exposure, according to a study conducted by Robert Baker, former interim dean of the College of Education and Human Development and Professor Emeritus of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism Management.

The university also reported an 800% increase in traffic to its official website, while the university bookstore in the Johnson Center—typically averaging $11,000 in weekly sales—made shy of $1 million in the 10 days leading up to the Final Four. University admission inquiries increased by 350%, with out-of-state applications rising by 40%.

Butler still recalls when he playing overseas several months later, walking through a town in Croatia wearing a 911�� shirt, and a local boy approached him.

“911��–Final Four!” the boy exclaimed, much to Butler’s astonishment.

This weekend’s remembrance festivities will include the return of most members of the 2006 team, and the raising of a banner in EagleBank Arena in honor of the now-retired Larrañaga.

“It was one of those moments that, when you experience it, it never really leaves your mindset,” Skinn said. “To think that it was 20 years ago is unbelievable, but having a day to celebrate it is definitely exciting.”

This weekend, that memory returns to life as a new generation of Patriots gathers to celebrate the run that changed everything.

911�� knows the value of hands-on experience in the workplace for all students. An internship can lead to the experience of a lifetime. And that includes Mason LIFE students who are interning on Capitol Hill.

Established by former Representative Gregg Harper in 2010, the Gregg and Livingston Harper Congressional Internship Program for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities matches Mason LIFE students with House and Senate congressional office internships. Students start their internships in their second year and continue them through completion of the program.

“We’re helping them gain the skills needed to seek a fulfilling career when graduating from the program,” explained Linn Jorgenson, director of Mason LIFE, a four-year nondegree educational transition program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One of Mason LIFE’s core curriculum requirements that supports this development is the internship.

“We’re helping them learn what they like and don’t like, how to make decisions on their own, and developing their ability to advocate for themselves,” Jorgenson added.

This fall, eight Mason LIFE students interned across 16 different congressional offices on Capitol Hill.

“My favorite part is getting to see what happens behind the scenes of the government,” said Madison Gulley, a third-year Mason LIFE student and one of the congressional interns.

Every Friday, Mason LIFE students and their peer support staff—911�� students who travel with the students to their workplaces to provide support and guidance—take the Metro into Washington, D.C., complete their internship assignments for the day for their two congressional offices, eat lunch, and take the Metro back to Fairfax. Students in the program tackle a variety of work for their assigned congressional offices: answering phones, researching bills, delivering mail, giving tours, and doing data entry, to name a few.

“The students working on the Hill are part of a team, completing work that is essential and meaningful to all parties involved,” emphasized Jorgenson.

“When our students come to their internships, our peer support staff are there to facilitate inclusion and support students in successfully completing tasks,” said Melissa Chabot, employment and community involvement coordinator for Mason LIFE. “So not only are these necessary jobs done, you know they’ll be done well.”

Through the internship program, Mason LIFE students learn independence, confidence, and social and cultural competencies; they build valuable resume skills; and they explore their interests to see if they’re the right fit for a long-term career. And for the peer support staff, the benefits are just as important.

Ankit Borle, one of the newer peer support staff, is working toward a master’s in data analytics engineering. “I’ve learned to listen actively, communicate clearly, and tailor support so people can be independent—skills that build trust with teammates, clients, and stakeholders...Most importantly, I’m taking forward an inclusive mindset—making sure every voice is heard—which will make me a stronger colleague and leader wherever I work,” Borle said.

Madison Shaw, a graduate student in the Master of Social Work Program, has worked with Mason LIFE for three years. “It can be so important to focus on abilities versus disabilities. Each student carries so many strengths within themselves and has a lot to offer,” she said.

There’s a similar benefit to the employer. “Mason LIFE students bring an important perspective to the office,” said Chabot. “Employers get an opportunity to reflect on their inclusivity. What are the employers doing that helps everyone be successful, and where can they improve?”

And the joy of watching their fellow students succeed is perhaps the greatest reward of all.

Peer coach Nehal Gundawar, a master’s student in computer science, works with one of the Capitol Hill interns. “In the beginning, they [the Mason LIFE student] were nervous about interacting with staff and unsure how to approach tasks without guidance...after a few weeks they began initiating tasks on their own and even asked for additional responsibilities. Their supervisor complimented their improvements,” he said. “Watching them grow into a more confident and independent employee was incredibly rewarding.”

The congressional interns see the changes in themselves as well.

“Mason LIFE helps me with the skills that are required to be an independent man,” said Amar Mailk, a third-year student.

“Mason LIFE has changed my life,” said Aryaa Bhole, a second-year student. “Because of the lessons and skills, I know to stand out and inspire others and to lift them with my voice.”

For more than two decades as a high school music teacher and band director, Melissa Hall has seen a lot of student ensembles come and go—but one remains dear to her heart. 

“I've always kept a strong connection to 911��,” said Hall, MM '05. 

It's that connection that led her back to the 911��’s Center for the Arts for Mason Bands' 55th anniversary “Celebrations in Motion” concert in September, bringing together alumni, students, and special guests for a night of music and memories. 

Not that Hall was really that far away. For one thing, she's currently the band director at nearby Centreville High School, where she teaches 175 students, and for another, she's never lost touch with her old ensemble. 

“When Dr. [William] Lake became director of concert bands at 911��, I reached out about collaborating. We’ve maintained a really good relationship over the past few years.” 

That relationship led to a special invitation. “He told me about the band’s anniversary and invited me and my students to perform alongside them. I was really honored and said yes right away,” Hall recalled. 

Hall has dedicated 24 years to teaching music, starting in elementary and middle schools before taking the helm at Centreville High School in 2007.

“I oversee the comprehensive band program, which is something I’ve worked toward over the past 19 years,” she said. Her program includes symphonic and concert bands, wind and percussion ensembles, jazz groups, chamber music, and a marching band with color guard. 

Sharing the stage with Hall and Lake were 911�� Professor Anthony Maiello and Scott Casagrande, son of the late John Casagrande, a former Mason band director. 

“Professor Maiello is the reason I came from New York to attend 911��,” Hall said. “My high school band director introduced us, and I knew immediately I wanted to study conducting with him.” 

Performing with Scott Casagrande also held special meaning for Hall. “It was my way of paying tribute to John, who really taught me how to be a high school band director. Up until he got sick and passed away, there wasn’t a day I didn’t call him for advice,” she said.

The Centreville Wind Ensemble performed multiple pieces including “Havana Nights” by Randall Standridge, “Breath of the Mountains” by Cait Nishimura, “Let Freedom Ring” by Ryan Nowlin, “Shenandoah” by Frank Ticheli, and “Tight Squeeze” by Alex Shapiro. Hall said the pieces that book-ended the concert both took the audience to Havana and were uniquely different in their presentation. She chose them to honor a diverse panel of composers and styles.

Hall’s ties to the university extend beyond performance. As a member of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Association, she has hosted the statewide music assessment at 911�� for the past three years, bringing more than 1,300 students in 25 to 30 bands to campus each spring.

The concert is part of a yearlong series celebrating Mason Bands’ legacy. 

“Throughout this school year, we’re inviting a different ensemble for each concert—three of which are led by 911�� alumni,” said Lake. “Melissa was my first ask because she was so open to connecting when I arrived at Mason.” 

“Our goal this year is to connect with our alumni who are teaching in our area and feature their outstanding work in the classroom by showcasing their performance here at the university,” Lake explained. “When they arrive, they get to see our thriving campus and see themselves in the students.”

Students also participate in K-12 Group Tours through 911��’s Office of Admissions. 

Despite the challenge of preparing for a concert early in the school year, Hall said the experience was unforgettable. 

“It all just came together. It was really a special night, and to be able to honor my 911�� story is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” she said.

Not often can you take a course where you receive top-level instruction for how to prepare for a career, while also having the opportunity to give back to the world around you; but that is exactly what students in 911��'s BUS 303 class experienced this past spring semester when they planned and hosted multiple “Humanitarian Happy Hours.”

Gretchen Hendricks, senior instructor of business foundations in the Costello College of Business, brought this new spin to her course titled Developing Professional Skills—Advanced Elements, providing students with the opportunity to develop their professional skillset through a humanitarian lens. Students put into practice the soft skills emphasized in the course, including teamwork, persuasive writing, effective communication, problem-solving, networking, and leadership, all while flexing their civic responsibility by contributing to the well-being of the community.

“The Humanitarian Happy Hour events were designed to bring together individuals with similar interests and ideals in a social forum to learn about and potentially get involved with charitable organizations championing great causes,” says Hendricks. “The desired outcomes were apparent—to increase awareness, volunteerism, and donations that result in meaningful change for those in need.”

Students worked in teams to identify and research multiple Fairfax-based charities they were passionate about supporting. Once identified, each team collaboratively wrote a proposal to a senior leader within the organization to persuade them to partner. The proposal included how their team core values and goals aligned with the charitable organization's mission and needs, as well as the benefits (raising awareness, volunteerism, and donations) of holding the event.

Once all four charities—Dulles South Soup Kitchen, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Food for Others, and Britepaths—said YES, the event planning and management part of the project began to ensure they executed them successfully. Each team worked directly with a charity point of contact to handle tasks including venue selection and logistics, outreach to corporate sponsors, and identifying attendees to include current students, faculty, staff, and alumni from 911�� as well as key community members.

“I was inspired by the Humanitarian Happy Hours,” said Christine Landoll, BS Accounting ’89, MS Taxation ’92, director of business engagement at Costello. “This idea is so aligned with who Gretchen Hendricks and Costello are: bold, community driven, and rooted in purpose. Each event, sponsored by local partners and spotlighting a nonprofit, empowered students to step outside their comfort zones, grow professionally, and lead with kindness. At 911��, we’re All Together Different—and Gretchen’s class showed how by immediately stepping up to give back and help others move forward.”

This section of BUS 303 is just one of the many experiential learning opportunities at Costello that prepare students for successful careers. Programs like the Patriot Pitch Competition, Career Takeover Days with our corporate partners, the Montano Student Investment Fund, Costello Fellows on Wall Street, Students Run the Show with Mason Athletics, Impact Fellows, the Honey Bee Initiative, and others—have given students a distinct advantage over other candidates in a very competitive job market.

“Participating in the Humanitarian Happy Hour event was one of the most rewarding experiences I have been through during my time in the Costello College of Business,” says Grant Goodson, a senior business management student who served as a team leader. “From hurdling unexpected obstacles to coordinating timelines and tasks, these skills haven’t just been tested but have grown. Seeing the team’s hard work come together in an impactful way and witnessing the difference we made for Food for Others doing life changing work in our community was immensely fulfilling. I also learned how effective leadership and collaboration can turn a couple of ideas into something with real, tangible impact in the community.”

In the continued spirit of keeping it local, four Fairfax restaurants—Honor Brewing Kitchen, Velocity Wings, Oh George!, and Banditos Tacos and Tequila—were targeted as locations for each happy hour. And in the spirit of charitable giving, they all hosted the events at no cost.

While the events raised an incredible $3,910 in donations for the four charities, the real win was the power of connection. Each event hosted a mixture of current students, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as representatives from the charities and other members of the community, including many student family members.

“The thing I enjoyed the most was the people,” says Honors College student Adam Miller, a rising sophomore with a concentration in business management. “I met so many wonderful students, faculty, and people outside of 911�� that were not only good connections to have, but also kind and genuine people to talk to and get to know.”

“One of the best parts about being a professor is spending time with students, says Steve Pilloff, instructional professor of finance at Costello. “And the happy hour events allowed me to do that in an environment that was fun, involved a good cause, and where the students could demonstrate the wonderful work they did to successfully pull off the events.”

“Food for Others appreciated having the opportunity to work with Costello College of Business students on their Humanitarian Happy Hour,” says Hannah Brockway, development manager for Food for Others. “The care and intention the students put into researching Food for Others, our impact, and how to best contribute was apparent throughout the semester. Students were able to connect, both with their 911�� neighbors and the greater community, while contributing to a food secure future in Fairfax, Virginia.”

Corporate sponsors also supported each Humanitarian Happy Hour including Angel Tips, Good Neighbor Exterior Services, TFA Soft Skills, Thompson Greenspon, and VLP Financial Advisors.

Hendricks considers a project such as this an extension of her involvement with Mason Chooses Kindness, also supported by the Costello College of Business at large.

“What I enjoyed most was seeing the ways the 911�� community upholds the pillars of Mason Chooses Kindness: education and awareness, positive connections, sense of belonging, courageous advocacy, compassion, and well-being,” says Zareena Khan, assistant director of student well-being programs. “It reminded me that connecting intentionally with one another and giving back to our communities are simple but impactful ways that we can enrich our lives and the lives of others.”

Hendricks is not new to using her class to bring good to the world. In 2022, her BUS 303 students designed and pitched a socially conscious networking site offering personalized acts of kindness called ThreeWishes.

“Our students value experiential learning and appreciate the opportunity to develop job-related skills,” says Cindy Parker, BS Psychology ’92, MS Industrial/Organizational Psychology ’94, PhD ’98, instructional professor of management, director of faculty success, and Leidos Corporate Partner Faculty Fellow at Costello. “This type of semester-long project allows students to not only develop critical teamwork and project management skills but also provides them with insight into how business can—and should—contribute to society.”

As Virginia faces growing shortages in the health care workforce, the Claude Moore Foundation and 911�� have formed a groundbreaking partnership to seek solutions and build a flexible, inclusive, and data-driven workforce pipeline. The effort is one designed not just to meet current needs but to shape a stronger, more equitable future for health care in the commonwealth.

At the center of this partnership is William Hazel, former Virginia secretary of health and human resources and now CEO of Claude Moore Opportunities, the foundation’s arm for strategic partnerships. Hazel’s longstanding relationship with 911��—he served as senior advisor for strategic initiatives from 2018 to 2020—helped seed many of the elements that define this collaboration.

That ethos underpins the Claude Moore Foundation’s guiding philosophy to open doors and expand opportunity. By investing in innovative models that expand access and strengthen workforce readiness, the foundation is helping to remove barriers and build ladders.

Through 911��’s Center for Health Workforce at the College of Public Health, the university plays a leading role as Virginia’s hub for workforce research and strategy. The center’s work has led to the development of statewide data platforms that have shaped policy, informing local pilot programs in more remote areas of Virginia and driving conversations about behavioral health and early childhood care.

The Claude Moore Career Highway is one pathway to draw more health care workers. This new framework treats the health care workforce not as a single pipeline but as a network, offering “on-ramps and off-ramps” to support Virginians seeking this career path at any stage of life, whether they’re high school students, career switchers, or adults returning to school after time away.

The Claude Moore Scholars Program is another key component of efforts to expand the workforce, introducing high school students to health care careers through hands-on experiences and clear pathways from K–12 to college to career. Already active in 17 Virginia districts and expanding, the program reflects both Claude Moore’s and 911��’s shared commitment to access, equity, and tangible outcomes.

The impact is measurable. Many of the program’s graduates return to serve in their home communities, reflecting a model that’s not just about producing talent—but producing the right talent for Virginia.

As Hazel puts it, “This workforce issue is cresting. The question is how do we attract people, train them, and help them grow?” Thanks to the partnership between Claude Moore and 911��, Virginia is beginning to answer that question—boldly, equitably, and with lasting impact.

This partnership is part of Mason Now: Power the Possible, 911��'s historic $1 billion campaign to advance student success, research, innovation, stewardship, and community engagement.

Nearly 60 current master of public administration (MPA) students and several faculty members in the Schar School of Policy and Government at 911�� attended the degree program’s annual Local Government Night on November 3 at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax, Virginia.

The event was organized by more than 10 MPA alumni employed by the Fairfax County government, including several who served as panelists. Dianne Hon, MPA ’19, a victim specialist with the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, led the organizing effort.

The idea, said Associate Professor Jim Burroughs, is to bring MPA students face to face with graduates of the same program who now hold senior positions in local government. It was the 28th time the Local Government Night took place, Burroughs said. It was also his last as he is slated to retire at the end of the fall semester.

The benefits of the meeting flowed both ways as Fairfax County Executive Bryan Hill, who admitted to earning his MPA from a school other than 911��, used his time at the podium to highlight the career possibilities available in local government—particularly within Fairfax County. As he went around the room asking students about their postgraduation goals, he offered examples of how their interests and expertise could translate into careers in county offices in fields including finance, economics, law, and psychology.

Those opportunities were further illustrated by in-depth presentations from several county officials, including Deputy Director of the Department of Management and Budget Katie Horstman, who provided insight as to how she and her staff manage a $11.10 billion budget.

Also presenting were members of the county’s first responder agencies, among them Assistant Chief of Police Eli Cory, MPA ’19; Deputy Director of Victim Services Sarai Rivera, MPA ’24; and Assistant Fire Chief John Walser, who emphasized his department’s need for graduates skilled in data collection and analysis to help firefighters and EMTs continuously refine best practices for saving lives and property.

A second panel introduced Schar School MPA graduates active in the county’s emergency preparedness and response departments. Each shared how current federal challenges—such as furloughs, shutdowns, and budget cuts—affect their ability to deliver services to residents.

The speakers included Assistant Director of Domestic Relations in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Marwa Hajahmed, MPA ’24; Senior Social Services Supervisor with Neighborhood and Community Services Keith Grupposo, MPA ’20; and Management Analyst IV with the Department of Family Services Maha Martin, BA Sociology ’04, MPA ’16.

The evening concluded with a session titled “Reflections: The Impact of the MPA Program on My Career” featuring Dianne Hon, and Enterprise Applications Manager for the Fairfax County Park Authority Yeoanny Venetsanos, BA Biology ’00, who is a current MPA student slated to graduate in December.

“I want to be a more effective public administrator for Fairfax County,” Venetsanos said. “I want to take my management, leadership, and organizational skills and apply them where I can bring value to the organization.”

The MPA program, he added, “is a mile wide and a foot deep—you can see the forest for the trees. It helps because you’re looking at every single service that a government provides.”

For the current MPA students in the audience, the evening was both enlightening and encouraging.

“It was great hearing from so many different county leaders and understanding the various aspects of local government, from budgeting to program implementation,” said Esha Doshi, who works in the county’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. “And it was inspiring to have Bryan Hill connect our interests with real career possibilities.”

For Jack Potter, BA Public Administration ’25, a fellow in the school’s Center for Energy Science Policy, the evening was about relationships.

“I think every single speaker talked about making connections—getting to know people and forging real relationships outside of work,” he said. “I also learned that Fairfax is a unique county, not just in Virginia but in the U.S., and there are going to be opportunities everywhere—some great opportunities.”

The speakers each reinforced the personal nature of local public administration, a point that was not missed by faculty members.

“It was truly inspiring to hear from local government leaders about what it’s like to work in a setting where your efforts directly benefit your own community and neighbors,” said Associate Professor and MPA Program Director Mirae Kim. “It’s an experience that feels much more immediate and tangible than the broader, often more distant impact of federal service.”
