As new technologies reshape our lives and culture, 911�� aims to be an ambassador of thoughtful collaboration between human and machine. The Grand Challenge Initiative solution of "driving responsible digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure" calls on faculty, researchers, and students to consider technology holistically and in context to help shape a digital future that is as ethical as it is advanced.

This year, both new and established summer camps across 911��'s Virginia campuses let high school students and undergraduates get hands-on experience with emerging technologies while demonstrating the importance of responsible use, paving the path for the next generation of innovators and inventors.

MIX Maker Academy

On the Fairfax Campus, the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX) is a central hub for innovation, exploration, and creativity at 911��, hosting a makerspace, media lab, and entrepreneurship incubator. From developing bio-inspired blimps to helping students jumpstart their start-ups, the MIX is a campus leader of responsible digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

This year, the MIX launched its inaugural summer camp program, introducing high school students to interdisciplinary innovation and principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) by building an integrated design project from the ground up.

During the two-week program, campers learn about the professional tools and technologies used in engineering, design, robotics, and digital media production, such as 3D printing, sewing and embroidery, woodshop, laser cutting, and studio lighting and camera work. By the end of the program, students have multiple small fabrication projects, integrated design projects, and a multimedia blog portfolio demonstrating their work and the skills developed during camp.

"We guide and encourage students to envision project ideas that would have a positive impact on the world, benefiting people, communities, and our environment," said Max B. Kazemzadeh, MIX makerspace and events manager.

MARC Robotics Academy

Another new opportunity for students this summer came from the College of Engineering and Computing's Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center (MARC) Robotics Academy: an ongoing internship program for high school and undergraduates to work alongside 911��'s robotics faculty and graduate students.

"The program is designed to give students firsthand experience with the research process while building technical and professional skills," said Jesse Kirkpatrick, associate research professor and codirector of MARC. "They get hands-on experience in technologies that are shaping the future."

Academy interns support cutting-edge research through hardware platform development, data collection and analysis, testing and coding machine learning, and more. This summer, for example, students who worked with Missy Cummings, professor and codirector of MARC, and Kirkpatrick built a data set to investigate how well large language models can search, retrieve, and identify relevant information within large collections of Freedom of Information Act documents. A team with Cameron Nowzari, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, helped research the design, development, and deployment of robot swarms.

"By developing both technical expertise and an appreciation for responsible innovation, the academy helps prepare future leaders who can contribute to secure, trustworthy, and sustainable technological solutions," said Kirkpatrick.

ACCESS Academy AI summer camp

At Mason Square, the second annual ACCESS Academy AI summer camp also prepared students for the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

Beginner session campers learned to program micro:bit robots to follow a track through Microsoft MakeCode. Advanced sessions campers spent their week learning Python programming and building functional code to make XRP robots autonomously traverse a maze. As these high school students develop machine-learning skills, faculty, staff, and 911�� students lead conversations about AI's real-world applications and regulations.

“We hope that the participants of our camp see the connection between the concepts of coding and the practical implementation of physical AI in real-time applications," said Roberto Pamas, ACCESS Academy director.

ACCESS Academy's AI summer camp exposes students to problem-based learning through real-world challenges as students develop skills in tech tools that boost their creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The camp also gives students a taste of what the College of Education and Human Development's (CEHD) ACCESS Academy—a no-cost alternative educational pathway that expands access to information technology education and skills for any rising 9th-12th grade student in the Commonwealth of Virginia—has to offer.

"ACCESS AI summer camp is demonstrating firsthand how new technologies and learning are shaping education and the world around us," said Christy Hudson of CEHD's Office of Strategic Enrollment. "We are helping shape the digital future."

Siddartha Shakya believes that there's more to cybersecurity than just hacking. The 911�� Bachelor's to Accelerated Master's Applied Science student spent his summer interning with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and now he’s even more confident in the importance of balancing humans and machines.

After graduating from high school, Shakya took a two-year gap before starting his studies at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Both financially and mentally, Shakya said he wasn't ready for college. But after working a few unfulfilling jobs, he knew it was time to go back.

"I always remember being the tech kid in my family: helping my parents set up their computers, teaching them how to navigate websites, and things like that," he said. Part of that role included protecting them from online scams. "I decided I wanted to go into a field where I could help prevent scams, so no families have to go through that."

Shakya transferred to 911�� through the ADVANCE Program after earning his associate of applied science in cybersecurity. During his time at both schools, Shakya worked to fill out his resume and develop his skills. He dove into the world of cyber competitions with the National Cyber League, U.S. Cyber Games, and PatriotHacks, among others.

He completed multiple certifications through the Computing Technology Industry Association and was named a 2025 ISACA Greater Washington DC Chapter Scholar, Cyber Ready Professionals Consortium Cohort 3 Scholar, and CrowdStrike × Cyber Skyline Mentee. And he made sure to give back through volunteering opportunities like the College of Engineering and Computing's Spring into STEM.

"I was constantly looking for ways to learn, gain experience, help other people, and get involved where I could," he said.

The one thing missing? A paid internship. Through the U.S. Cyber Games, Shakya connected with the U.S. Department of Energy Scholars Program, earning a spot in the summer 2026 cohort and an internship with the NNSA.

Shakya has worked on two main projects. The first is a full assessment of the NNSA's Cybersecurity Supply Chain Risk Management Hub, combing through documentation for outdated policy, practice, or information. The second is piloting NetRise: a software supply chain security program. Specifically, he's cataloging what artificial intelligence (AI) systems are being used across the organization and whether they comply with the NNSA's cybersecurity policies.

"There's a big push toward AI use, and with that comes a push for transparency and making sure all software aligns with our mission and security standards," Shakya explained.

Getting hands-on with so many different AI tools is something Shakya hopes can be applied to his coursework and future career, particularly because he's planning a future in federal work. "People think cybersecurity is all about hacking," he said. "But it's also about communication. If you can't communicate clearly about the tools, what to use, and how to use them, then there are going to be mistakes and delays."

That person-first approach was a revelation for Shakya. As evidenced by his long resume of team-based cyber competitions and his enjoyment of the course IT 343 IT Project Management, "I like to work in teams, I like talking to people. I always want a balance of technical work and people-facing work."

And taking an authentic, person-first approach is also his best advice for fellow students. "Network, meet people, and be yourself," he said. "I know there's an urge to over-prepare for interviews, but people crave authenticity. Practice, but don't read off a script."

When asked what advice he would give to students interested in internships, rising 911�� senior Dominic Jones said, "don't limit yourself."

It's advice he's already following. This summer, the business analytics major in the Costello College of Business interned for Bognet Construction, focusing on project management.

Jones wants to work in sports analytics or analytics within consulting. But much like he advises, he's approaching his studies with an open mind. "Since you can do anything with business, I didn't want to home in on one sector just yet," he said.

When he met the Bognet Construction team at one of 911��'s career fairs, he saw an opportunity to broaden his horizons. "I don't have a background in construction," he said, "but the Bognet team was excited for me to learn and try. They wanted me to grow throughout each week."

His internship responsibilities include project management, supporting engineers, architects, and other project managers to ensure the build is on track. Despite this being a new field for him, his skills from business analytics have been able to transfer. "Being detail-oriented is really important in both," he said. "Every single little detail matters, because one error can build into a much bigger problem."

And just as Jones is growing into this role, he said the best part of the internship has been watching something grow from a blank space. "Seeing all the different subcontractors come and go, how the plans are communicated to them, how they get their jobs done: There's a lot that goes into good construction, and it's cool to see."

Jones is no stranger to teamwork. A member of the intramural basketball team, he understands the importance of maximizing strengths and communicating clearly and effectively. Working in construction, he said, has helped him further develop that skill. "There's so many moving parts and people; everyone has their own viewpoint and focus area. Learning how to communicate and work with everyone's individual skills and strengths is a skill I'll take into my classes and the workforce."

As Jones prepares to start his senior year at 911��, he's coming back to campus ready to take advantage of all the possibilities. "The more things you go to, the more opportunities you have to meet people and the chance to get the career you want," he said. "Go to events, join clubs, and try new avenues. You never know what opportunities might teach you that will make you stand out."

Gabriella Lemus, a sophomore accounting major, entered 911��’s Costello College of Business with a head start and no plans on stopping. Not only is she a year ahead in school thanks to college and AP credit, she’s also been building her resume as a real estate agent and vice president of Mason Consulting Group. Now, she’s tackling her first summer internship with that same determination to excel.

Lemus is a project control intern for SAIC, a major government contractor, working on cleaning up invoices, updating reports, and ensuring all the accounting is correct.

Business analytics courses prepared her well for this position. “Knowing how to navigate Excel has really helped me, and that’s thanks to Professor Michael King. I was able to say confidently that I have strong Excel skills and experience when applying. I’m actually helping other interns improve their Excel skills, and they come to me with questions.”

Lemus may be teaching her fellow interns, but she’s doing plenty of learning as well. Being open-minded is, she said, a key part of the experience. “You have to be willing to learn everything, growing your knowledge and abilities in order to complete the tasks.”

Learning how to ask questions, for example, is one skill she’s working on improving. “I used to be very shy reaching out to my managers with questions,” she said. “I’ve gotten much more comfortable by reminding myself that people are here to help, that they are investing their time into me because they saw something in me. And if I have a question, others probably do too.”

Those communication skills are one tool she hopes to use in both future courses as well as her extracurriculars. As the vice president of Mason Consulting Group, she organizes events, interviews new consultants, and works with external clients. Communicating through differences in order to solve problems is an invaluable skill, one that she’s further developing through her SAIC internship.

Working within a large company has also given her valuable insights into how to best manage the growing consulting group and her growing career. Lemus works as a real estate agent for the Piano Home Group, with dreams of growing her own agency in the future. “I really love what I’m learning at SAIC, because I can apply it at a smaller level to my own business.”

If there’s one thing Lemus hopes her fellow students will learn from her experiences, it’s the importance of getting involved. “The networking at Costello has given me so many great opportunities, including this internship,” she said. “And it helps me academically, too. I’ve become a better student by being more engaged with my classmates.”

"One of the goals of the Costello Business faculty is to support our students in being 'Career Ready.' It is an inspiration to see how Gabriella Lemus is using the knowledge and skills that she learned in my Business Analytics classes to succeed in her internship," said King. "Her commitment to hard work and positive attitude will carry her far!"

Year-round, 911��'s colleges, centers, and labs are taking a people-first integrated approach to human health and well-being that advances science, develops talent, and strengthens communities. That includes the summer, when labs and studios open their doors for the community to learn how innovations in art and science can make our world a healthier place.

From bioengineering to big bands, these summer programs are teaching all ages that 911��'s Grand Challenge Initiative solution of "improving human health, well-being, and preparedness" is about more than numbers in a medical chart.

BioE Buzz

In its third year, BioE Buzz introduces high school students to the greater field of bioengineering and groundbreaking research at 911��. Rising juniors and seniors get hands-on experience with bioengineering technologies like 3D printing and ultrasound, learn about nanofabrication and tissue engineering, meet faculty and researchers from the Department of Bioengineering, and compete as a team for a one-week internship in one of 911��'s research labs.

"We love when campers connect with one another over a shared passion for solving problems in biology and medicine," said Khadija Zaidi-Rashid, assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Computing and codirector of BioE Buzz camp.

This year's 24 campers designed cardiac stents, extracted collagen and created polymers from animal tissues, and controlled a hand prothesis with bio signals. They also got a taste of college life: eating in dining halls, touring facilities, and learning team-building at The Edge on the Science and Technology Campus. Current 911�� undergraduates and graduate students serve as coordinators, counselors, and teachers for the camp as well, so campers can see a full picture of what's possible at 911��.

"Whether our campers select a path in health policy, medical sciences, academic research, or entrepreneurship, they are all united in their passion for making a true impact on humanity," said Zaidi-Rashid.

AI in Health

A new camp for 2026, the AI in Health Camp introduces rising high school juniors and seniors to how artificial intelligence is used in health care and public health and how it can be designed and evaluated responsibly.

"The camp is designed to prepare the next generation to use AI responsibly to improve patient safety, expand access to reliable health information, and make the information more accessible and understandable through inclusive design," said Maria Uriyo, an associate professor in the College of Public Health. "By reaching high school students early, the camp helps them explore emerging careers at the intersection of AI, health care, and public health while contributing to a more inclusive future health workforce."

Over the course of one week, students build foundational skills in AI literacy, practicing user-centered and inclusive design and safe and responsible AI use through daily AI Maker Labs. Graduate students in the Department of Health Administration, Policy and Informatics coach campers through designing and building community health chatbots. On the last day of camp, students present their work at a student showcase.

"We want students to understand that AI can be a powerful tool for health, but it always needs human judgment, safety checks, and inclusive design to provide meaningful and responsible benefits," said Uriyo.

911�� Jazz Camp

Human health and well-being is more than a matter of science. "Jazz music is said to 'wash away the dust of life,' improve our mental agility, and help us discover our true selves," said John Kocur, an associate professor of jazz studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

911�� Jazz Camp has existed in various forms since 2005, with its current form in its fifth year. This year, 87 students attended to learn music theory, practice improvisation, work with master musicians, and perform. Each day ends with a concert by a professional musician. The goal: developing the creative capacity of each musician and immersing them in the culture so they can experience the benefits of jazz throughout their lives.

"We hope each student remembers what it feels like to express yourself through your instrument spontaneously while jamming along with others," said Kocur.

And at 911�� Jazz Camp, these experiences are open to all. This year's cohort included 12 adult students, demonstrating how finding wellness through music can be done at any age.

"This music has served vital roles of survival for over a century, and it still has many lessons to teach us about cooperation, personal expression, and peace," said Kocur. "Whether you are an experienced improviser or just getting started, the expert faculty will help you realize your potential and grow into the musician you want to become."

Rebuilding after trauma: 911�� psychologist hopes to improve early care for survivors of violently acquired spinal cord injuries sholla4 Mon, 08/10/2026 - 09:52

A fall from a ladder, a car crash, a gunshot: In the blink of an eye, a spinal cord injury can change someone’s life forever. Adapting to these new circumstances can take some patients years. Leah M. Adams, associate professor of clinical psychology in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, is hoping to discover what might make that process easier.

Alongside colleagues Renee Madathil from University of Rochester and Chris Hilderbrant of the Rochester Spinal Association, Adams, a clinical rehabilitation psychologist, is researching early psychosocial adaptation in survivors of violently acquired spinal cord injuries to determine what and when interventions are most beneficial. This spring, they received $285,000 from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation to support their research.

Violently acquired spinal cord injuries refer to a subset of spinal cord injuries that are caused by interpersonal violence, such as gunshot wounds, stabbing, or other person-to-person contact. These injuries commonly affect a different demographic than nonviolently acquired spinal cord injuries.

“Violence is the second leading cause for Latinx folks and one of the top two causes for Black folks. Long-term trends suggest that young Black men make up nearly half of all people with violently acquired spinal cord injuries,” said Adams. “They’re also younger, on average, and may be less traditionally established than their counterparts without violently acquired injuries.” Adams also noted that people with violently acquired injuries are more likely to have greater social vulnerabilities due to systemic factors like poverty and the criminal/legal system.

Adams describes that, with violently acquired injuries, "there's a different buzzing in the atmosphere of the care team." There can be increased safety risks to the patient and the healthcare team even while in the hospital, as well as additional risks to the patient once discharged, that can impact how a patient receives care.

"Our hope is to narrow down what's helpful and what's not for these patients, so providers can offer optimal care at the right time," said Adams.

Using the National Spinal Cord Injury Database, Adams, her doctoral students, and collaborators will look at patients from 2016 to present with violently acquired spinal cord injuries and their progression over the first five years living with the injury.

"We're looking at difference trajectories of adaptation and seeing if we can identify which kinds of factors put people in positions to have better outcomes or potentially worse outcomes," she said. "With that baseline, we can start identifying risk factors and create pathways for earlier and more effective interventions."

This quantitative data will be combined with qualitative data from patient and spinal cord injury specialist mental health provider interviews, the latter of which is a unique addition to the project. Their direct experience in caring for patients over multiple sessions and years means they understand what works well, what kinds of gaps exist, and how health care delivery could be improved.

"We wanted to make sure we got multiple perspectives on the project, which is why we have multiple collaborators," said Adams, “including folks with lived experience with spinal cord injuries as part of the study team.”

This multi-method approach is one that Adams sees as essential. For individuals who have undergone a traumatic and life-altering injury, these varied perspectives help paint a fuller, more vibrant picture of the varied pathways patients might take in their healing journey, she said.

"This population is so important. They face unique stressors and barriers, and they’re deserving of focused attention and support," said Adams. “I'm really hopeful that our work can spotlight some of the strengths and resources and ideas that they have, as well as help medical teams make decisions about where to put their valuable resources.”

This intersectionality is part of Adams' overall research philosophy, reflected in her role as core faculty for the Women and Gender Studies Program. And as a two-time 911�� alum—MA Psychology ’10, PhD Psychology ’14—it's a methodology she's refined through her time at 911�� as both student and faculty in the Department of Psychology.

"Both the tangible and intangible resources have made 911�� a really phenomenal place to study and work," said Adams. "This community respects and invests in research all across the continuum, from basic science to translational."

Hot summer days often lead to poor air quality. High temperatures and high air pressure systems cause pollutant buildups, creating ground-level ozone that can lead to a variety of health issues. And as climate change increases summer temperatures around the globe, being able to track and predict air quality is becoming a public health priority.

B.H. Baek, research associate professor in 911��’s Center for Satellite and Earth Science Research in the College of Science, is developing air quality and emissions modeling systems to help track and predict local and regional air pollutants and their adverse human health impacts.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes—collectively known as BTEX—are common air pollutants, originating from various industrial and manufacturing processes, vehicle emissions, and natural sources such as forest fires. This suite of toxic air contaminants is particularly prevalent in urban environments, as well as near industrial facilities such as power plants and factories. Short- and long-term exposure to BTEX compounds can cause a variety of health issues, including elevated risks of cancer, respiratory diseases, neurological effects, and adverse birth outcomes.

Baek is developing high-resolution, year-long ambient concentration fields for the Louisville, Kentucky, region. This project expands on his previous work developing an air pollution simulation model for the U.S. Gulf Region, home to more than 120 petroleum refineries and subsequently elevated BTEX and styrene emissions.

“We know where the power plants and refineries that produce these emissions are located. We have a map of where the people are driving and living. And with that data, we generate this map of our concentration throughout the region based on the observation data, the estimated emission sources that we have, and the meteorologist data,” Baek explained.

Cross-referenced with hospitalization data and blood samples from residents of the Gulf region from 2011 to 2016, the model provided a more complete picture of both exposure to and the impacts of styrene and BTEX on public health outcomes.

Unlike other highly contaminated areas Baek has worked in, historic monitoring of BTEX in Louisville is much more limited. “It’s a smaller city surrounded by trees, so despite the BTEX contamination, public health has not been a major issue,” said Baek. “It has not been monitored to the same extent.”

Baek and his team will use their toxic simulation data to help fill in the gaps. Called “data fusion,” the model will combine observational data from real-time measurements via a novel mobile app—developed by Professor Yue Cheng from Texas A&M University—with emissions data collected from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"The main benefit is public health,” said Baek. “Epidemiologists need more accurate data for them to link to their studies of the health effects of air toxin exposure. Now, the model can be expanded for the future to come.”

Baek also notes how this model could support air-quality tracking and predictions as climate change progresses. “We’ll be able to see how climate change will impact the regional scale,” he said.

Baek is already using the simulation to help fill the gaps in the EPA’s National Emissions Inventory; this data will be publicly available once published.

“We developed this model to support the EPA’s work in regulating manufacturers,” said Baek. As the model continues to expand and develop over time with projects like these, it will help state and federal leaders make evidence-based decisions and inform advocacy around emissions regulations.

“911�� is at the forefront of toxic air pollution work,” said Baek.

From a nearly decade-long gap between high school and college, to his passion in a niche field of kinesiology, 911�� senior Ryan Hutchinson is proving that the road less traveled is sometimes the better one.

In Hutchinson’s own recollection, "I didn’t do great at the high school level.” He made the decision to enter the workforce after high school graduation, unsure if he was ready for the rigor of college-level academics. But after losing his retail job during the COVID-19 lockdown, Hutchinson decided to take the plunge and enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) to get a personal trainer certificate.

“I ended up doing really well, grade-wise,” he said. “And I actually really loved it. So I decided to keep going.” With the certificate in hand, he transferred to 911�� to pursue a BS in kinesiology from the College of Education and Human Development.

“I like helping people,” he said. “I’m good at motivating them.”

Hutchinson started volunteering at DPI Adaptive Fitness in Fairfax the summer before he transferred to 911��. There, he discovered another, deeper layer to his passion for fitness and coaching: adaptive fitness, or fitness for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.

Throughout his time at 911��, Hutchinson has been taking his lessons from the classroom straight to his clients in the gym. Along with one-on-one training, Hutchinson coaches the adaptive boxing club at DPI, building the skills needed to hopefully one day reach his goal of coaching Paralympians.

“The best thing is seeing their progress,” he said of his clients. “The physical improvement, emotional improvement, cognitive improvement: seeing somebody who doesn't believe they can do something prove themselves wrong? It’s amazing.”

His interest in adaptive fitness also inspired his fellow students. A few of his classmates held internships with DPI after hearing about Hutchinson’s work. “They had no idea what adaptive fitness was, and now they’re trying it out, and will be able to tell others what it is. So we’re slowly building interest and understanding of a small but really important field,” he said.

That awareness is growing outside of kinesiology as well. During his senior year, Hutchinson got involved in 911��’s developing Beep Baseball team: an adaptive version of baseball for blind and visually impaired athletes.

“They sort of made me an unofficial coach,” he joked.

Hutchinson helped run two Learn to Play clinics for the team and had the opportunity to attend a tournament last summer in Boston. “I try to volunteer for all the adaptive sports programs I can. It’s so interesting to see how they adapt these sports and to watch the elite athletes compete.”

With dreams of coaching as his guide, Hutchinson will be pursuing a master of education, focusing on adaptive physical education for children with disabilities at Old Dominion University in the fall.

“If I could tell an incoming freshman one thing, it would be to keep your perspective open,” he said. “You might show up wanting to go one direction, but opportunities will arise in adjacent fields, and it’s worth trying them out. There’s so much more out there than you think.”

Senior Khaled Alkurd is ending his undergraduate career on a high note.

In the past few months, the Costello College of Business student won the Future Founders track at the 2026 Patriot Pitch for his company DealFax, an operational readiness assessment platform that helps business owners prepare for sale through their trusted advisors; got first place in the AGA’s National Datathon; and landed second place in the Management Consulted’s Case Competition World Cup out of 1,100 applicants. It’s a testament to his drive and track record in business, speeding up instead of slowing down as he approaches graduation.

As Alkurd prepares to cross the stage and dive fully into an MS in accounting with a focus on analytics and forensic accounting through the Bachelor’s to Accelerated Master’s (BAM) pathway, he spoke about his undergraduate journey at 911�� and the importance of business as a force for good.

Choosing the Patriot path

911�� is ranked highly for its internship availability and outcomes, and that was key for me. The connections that 911�� can afford students are very strong, with so many major companies: Amazon, Capital One, Deloitte, etc. Folks can sample from a few of them or build really deep relationships with one. The opportunity is unmatched.

As for why I chose accounting: a decade of operating my family’s home inspection business NextDay Inspect taught me that financials drive every meaningful decision in a business. I wanted to understand that language at depth, especially the analytical and forensic side. Beyond the technical work, I gravitate toward business as a force for good. Done well, business is win-win. People walk away better off than before they engaged.

A great place for internships

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Ryan and Wetmore, Baker Tilly, and will be with PwC’s Deals practice this summer in Financial Due Diligence as I bridge into the MS program through BAM. The Office of Career Services in Costello has been amazing in their support. They reviewed my resume and cordoned off a private room for me to conduct Zoom interviews.

Overall, the support at 911�� is tremendous. It’s a big university, but it feels like a family. And Costello College of Business is really well equipped to deliver results, so there’s no expectations that are set that are not met. I’m very thankful for all the support.

From classroom to community

I am particularly proud of the work we’ve done through Beta Alpha Psi Theta Alpha, the accounting honors organization, for which I served as president this past year. We’ve been able to engage with the community through volunteering with the Junior Achievement Finance Park, where we’ve reached 960 eighth-grade students through teaching early financial literacy. Not only have I seen our volunteers grow as leaders and take ownership of those trainings, but I think learning how to educate and craft the message of finance in a way that is tailored for the audience is an incredibly important skill we improve through this work.

Fighting fires while forging skills

I joined Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company in 2008 when I was 16 and served for three and a half years. Now, I’m in the final stages of joining Sterling Volunteer Fire Company.

The job rewires how you think. Each scenario drops you into a chaotic situation and teaches you to stop reacting and start reading the room to figure out what is a priority and what can wait. On a call, you learn to gather information fast, communicate clearly, and trust the people next to you. Both those skills carry into how I approach client work.

Advice for the next generation of 911�� Patriots

Start early. There are experiences you can only get as freshmen and sophomores, like early pathway programs or externships. There’s so much you’ll miss by not engaging in student organizations; it’s an entirely different conversation than in the classroom, and it’s one you don’t want to miss out on because it’s helping with that connection to additional opportunity.

Learning doesn’t stop when you finish school. Whenever you start a new job or a new program, you learn new rules, new strategies, and new systems. And just like classroom education, there’s science behind how that learning can be best supported.

“Large multinational or national organizations need people with knowledge of how people learn and how to create systems and supports for learning and development,” explained Lisa Giacumo, associate professor of learning design and technology in 911��’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

Learning experience design (LXD) and user experience (UX) research are two key pillars of the CEHD’s learning design and technology master’s program. Giacumo has spent her faculty career developing courses on accessible workplace learning, needs assessment, and evaluation, that merge theory with hands-on application to give students a “nuanced” understanding of real-world use cases. The research and design courses (i.e., EDIT 732 and EDIT 752) she leads currently pair students with live clients to develop solutions for LXD problems or new opportunities.

“The recursive loop of asking for input, getting feedback, professional reflection, and making revisions is an important part of the process that is hard to conceptualize from textbook alone,” said Giacumo. “With live clients, students get a chance to see how things might work outside of a textbook while learning how to communicate as a consultant.”

This semester, students worked with two startups: EMK Learning Solutions LLC and Research Sphere.

“Working with a live client and a team really made the whole experience feel more like a UX job. You have deadlines, you have limitations, you have to make decisions and iterate. It feels very realistic,” said 911�� alumna Georgiana Patrichi-Abarca, BA Conflict Analysis and Resolution ’15, a current student in the learning design and technology master’s program. She’s been able to apply what she’s learned in class to her full-time job with the U.S. Department of State, developing training for a new piece of software.

Master’s student Tyler Girvan came into the learning design and technology program with a background in video game design and graphic design. “Getting that practical experience from research inception to executing a prototype was the stand-out element of the course for me,” said Girvan. “It helped me understand where I can feed my past skills through these new filters.”

Girvan continued, “You have to balance meeting the needs of the user while negotiating the ideas and goals of the client, and that’s a skill we were able to develop working with real clients as opposed to simulations."

“The closer you connect what you do in the learning environment to what you need done in the performance environment, the easier it is for learners to transfer what they learned into desired performance on the job,” said Giacumo.

Maurine Kwende, MEd Curriculum and Instruction ’15, CERG Learning Technologies ’15, and PhD Education ’23, is the founder and CEO of EMK Learning Solutions LLC, one of the participating businesses for the course. Her business works with companies to help improve their training and leadership capabilities, leveraging Kwende’s own expertise in learning systems and design. This semester, students worked on developing a professional development chatbot for EMK Learning Solutions that could coach employees when a human coach and trainer isn’t available or isn’t an option. The bot will also be a thinking and brainstorming partner for new employees to get a head start on ideas prior to meeting with their supervisors or stakeholders.

Kwende found the commitment of the students in the course commendable. “They’re dedicated and passionate about our field,” she said. “In the beginning, it felt like a mentoring process ,which was very exciting. Then it became a two-way process: I mentored them as a consultant, and they reverse-mentored me in the areas of technology. In the end, the students helped expand my thinking and showed me the potential of the product. They grew a seed into a full tree.”

“911�� attracts many very talented, smart, and driven individuals,” said Giacumo. “These students contribute to these organizations’ success stories. And after the classes are over, my students build their own success stories by landing their next job or promotion and continue developing their consulting practices on a solid foundation.”
